G N' R Lies is Guns N' Roses' second release, a split album released on November 29, 1988 on Geffen Records. The first four tracks are re-recordings and remixes from the band's 1986 EP Live ?!*@ Like a Suicide, featuring raw, punk-influenced hard rock covers and originals including Aerosmith's "Mama Kin" and the band's own "Reckless Life" and "Move to the City." The second half consists of four new acoustic-driven tracks recorded in 1988, marking a dramatic shift in tone. "Patience," built on layered acoustic guitars and Axl Rose's whistled melody, became a number-four hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and revealed a side of the band rarely heard on Appetite for Destruction. Slash's acoustic guitar work throughout the second half demonstrates the blues foundation beneath his electric playing, particularly on the country-tinged "Used to Love Her" and a stripped-down acoustic reworking of "You're Crazy," which had appeared in electric form on the debut. The album reached number two on the Billboard 200 and sold over five million copies in the United States. Its acoustic tracks influenced the band's direction on the Use Your Illusion albums, where ballads and multi-layered arrangements would sit alongside harder material.
