Misterioso was recorded live at the Five Spot Cafe in New York City on August 7, 1958, and released on Riverside Records. The quartet features Johnny Griffin on tenor saxophone, Ahmed Abdul-Malik on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums. The seven-track program draws entirely from Thelonious Monk's own compositions, including "'Round Midnight," "Evidence," "In Walked Bud," "Nutty," "Let's Cool One," and the title track. Griffin, who had recently joined Monk's working group, was one of the fastest tenor saxophonists in jazz — his rapid-fire technique contrasted with Monk's more deliberate, space-filled piano approach, creating a productive tension that defines the album. Monk's characteristic comping — dropping out behind the soloist, then re-entering with a dissonant chord or rhythmic jab — is captured in the live setting with particular clarity. "Misterioso" itself, built on a walking pattern of ascending and descending sixths, is one of Monk's most distinctive compositions. The Five Spot was Monk's regular New York engagement during this period, and the live recording preserves the energy and spontaneity of the quartet in its home venue. The album documents one of the strongest editions of Monk's quartet and remains an essential live jazz recording of the late 1950s.
