Coltrane's Sound was assembled from sessions recorded at Atlantic Studios in October 1960, the same three-day period that produced My Favorite Things. The quartet — McCoy Tyner on piano, Steve Davis on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums — was the first stable incarnation of the group that would define Coltrane's classic period. Atlantic released the album in 1964 without Coltrane's direct involvement, drawing on material left over after the My Favorite Things sessions, much as Prestige had done with earlier unused takes. Despite its origins as a compilation, the album plays as a cohesive set, moving from the buoyant swing of "The Night Has a Thousand Eyes" through Coltrane originals like "Equinox" and "Liberia," both of which point toward the more searching explorations he would pursue on Impulse! Records. "Central Park West" offers a gentler contrast, while "Satellite" features pianoless trio passages that showcase the rhythmic interplay between Coltrane and Jones. The inclusion of a reimagined "Body and Soul" connects the album to the tenor saxophone ballad tradition while demonstrating how far Coltrane had moved beyond it. Critics have noted the album as an underrated entry in Coltrane's discography, documenting his quartet at an early, energized stage of development.
