Recorded on March 17, 1965 at Rudy Van Gelder's studio for Blue Note Records, Maiden Voyage is Herbie Hancock's fifth album as a leader and a defining statement of 1960s modal jazz. The quintet — Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, George Coleman on tenor saxophone, Ron Carter on bass, and Tony Williams on drums — closely mirrors the Miles Davis Quintet in which Hancock, Carter, and Williams were then serving as the rhythm section. All five compositions are Hancock originals, unified by an oceanic theme that runs from the title track's hypnotic suspended chords through the darting energy of "The Eye of the Hurricane" and the lyrical flow of "Dolphin Dance." The music balances accessibility with harmonic sophistication, using modal frameworks and floating vamps rather than conventional chord progressions. Williams's rhythmic flexibility is central to the album's character, shifting between fluid swing and more abstract textures. Produced under the supervision of Alfred Lion, the session was completed in a single day. Several of its compositions have become jazz standards: "Maiden Voyage" and "Dolphin Dance" in particular are among the most widely performed and recorded pieces to emerge from the 1960s. The album is regularly cited alongside Empyrean Isles as the peak of Hancock's Blue Note period and remains a foundational recording in the post-bop canon.
