Takin' Off is Herbie Hancock's debut album as a leader, recorded on May 28, 1962 at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey and released on Blue Note Records. Produced by Alfred Lion, the quintet features Freddie Hubbard on trumpet and flugelhorn, Dexter Gordon on tenor saxophone, Butch Warren on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums. All six compositions are Hancock originals, written when he was just twenty-two years old. The album's breakout track, "Watermelon Man," became a crossover hit, reaching the pop charts and generating further success through Mongo Santamaria's Latin-flavored cover version. The composition's funky, blues-rooted groove introduced Hancock to a wide audience and became one of the most covered jazz tunes of its era. Beyond that signature track, the album reveals Hancock's range as a composer: "Alone and I" is a sophisticated ballad, "The Maze" ventures into darker harmonic territory with passages of free improvisation, and "Driftin'" and "Empty Pockets" work blues-based forms with rhythmic invention. Gordon, then in the midst of a productive East Coast period before moving to Europe, brings a commanding tenor presence alongside Hubbard's bright trumpet. The album established Hancock as a bandleader and composer of substance, setting the stage for his prolific Blue Note catalog that followed.
