Born to Run is Bruce Springsteen's third studio album, released on August 25, 1975 on Columbia Records. Recorded over fourteen months at 914 Sound Studios in Blauvelt, New York and the Record Plant in New York City, the album was produced by Springsteen, Jon Landau, and Mike Appel. The E Street Band — Roy Bittan on piano, Clarence Clemons on tenor saxophone, Danny Federici on organ, Garry Tallent on bass, Max Weinberg on drums, and Steven Van Zandt on guitar — is joined by session players including Randy Brecker, who plays the muted trumpet on "Meeting Across the River." The album's wall-of-sound production drew on Phil Spector's layered approach, with Springsteen famously obsessing over the title track's arrangement. Clemons's saxophone is central to the album's character, from the triumphant break in "Born to Run" to the extended closing solo on "Jungleland," which builds over a cinematic narrative that ranks among Springsteen's most ambitious compositions. "Thunder Road" opens the album with piano and harmonica before expanding into a full-band anthem. The album reached number three on the Billboard 200 and landed Springsteen on the covers of both Time and Newsweek simultaneously. In 2003, Rolling Stone ranked it at number 18 on its list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
