Arthur Herzog Jr. was an American lyricist and songwriter whose collaborations with Billie Holiday yielded some of jazz's most enduring standards. Herzog co-wrote "God Bless the Child" with Holiday in 1941, a song that became one of the most recorded jazz vocals of all time. His other notable works include "Don't Explain" and "Some Other Spring," both composed with Holiday in the late 1930s and early 1940s. These songs showcased his gift for crafting lyrics that perfectly complemented jazz vocal expression. He died in Detroit in 1983.
