Red Garland was a jazz pianist known primarily as a performer and bandleader rather than a prolific composer of original material. His recorded catalog as a leader, spanning sessions for Prestige and Fantasy Records from 1956 through the early 1960s and later comeback albums in the 1970s, consists largely of interpretations of standards and blues. "Blues by Five," associated with his work in the Miles Davis Quintet alongside John Coltrane, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones, is among the few compositions credited to his name. Garland's influence as a creator lies more in his approach to the piano than in a body of written works. His block-chord voicings and fluid touch shaped the sound of piano trio jazz and left a lasting mark on the instrument's role in small-group settings.
