Pat Metheny is a guitarist, bandleader, and composer whose prolific output over five decades has made him one of the most widely recognized figures in modern jazz. Born in Lee's Summit, Missouri, in 1954, he began his recording career with Bright Size Life in 1975, featuring bassist Jaco Pastorius, and has since released more than four dozen albums as a leader. His compositional catalog is vast, spanning solo guitar pieces, small group works, orchestral scores, and large-scale multimedia projects. Metheny's writing is distinguished by its lyrical melodies, open harmonic voicings, and an ability to move between accessible, song-like structures and adventurous free-form passages. His compositions for the Pat Metheny Group, developed in close partnership with keyboardist Lyle Mays, defined a distinctive ensemble sound that earned multiple Grammy Awards across different categories. Notable works from his catalog include the album-length suite The Way Up and the Orchestrion project. Among his compositions on AllSolos are We Had a Sister and Whittlin', a blues-form piece. Metheny has collaborated with artists as diverse as Ornette Coleman, Charlie Haden, Herbie Hancock, David Bowie, and Steve Reich. He has won twenty Grammy Awards across twelve categories, a record unmatched by any other artist, and his compositions continue to be widely studied and performed.
