Calvin Massey was a Philadelphia-born trumpeter and composer whose writing left a lasting mark on postbop and avant-garde jazz despite a career cut short by his death in 1972 at the age of 44. From the mid-1950s onward, Massey focused increasingly on composition, producing works championed by John Coltrane and others. His only album as a leader, Blues to Coltrane, recorded in 1961 with Jimmy Garrison, McCoy Tyner, and Tootie Heath, showcased his gifts as both writer and arranger. His ambitious Black Liberation Movement Suite, commissioned in 1969, expanded to nine movements honoring figures in the African American freedom struggle. Massey also contributed arrangements to Coltrane's landmark Africa Brass sessions and toured with Archie Shepp in his final years. Bakai, featured on AllSolos, is among his most enduring compositions. Though his catalog was modest in size, posthumous tributes have continued to bring attention to his underrecognized body of work.
