Sherman Edwards was a songwriter, composer, and lyricist whose work spanned pop hits of the 1950s and 1960s and the Broadway stage. After studying at New York University and serving in World War II, Edwards worked as a pianist and bandleader before turning to songwriting full time. Writing out of the Brill Building, he produced a string of successful singles including Wonderful! Wonderful!, a 1957 hit for Johnny Mathis and featured on AllSolos, as well as Broken Hearted Melody for Sarah Vaughan and See You in September. His frequent lyricist collaborators included Ben Raleigh, Hal David, and Sid Wayne. In the 1960s he devoted himself to writing the book, music, and lyrics for the Broadway musical 1776, which won the Tony Award for Best Musical in 1969 and was adapted into a 1972 film.
