Bruno Martino (1925-2000) was an Italian composer, singer, and pianist whose work bridged popular song and jazz. Active from the mid-1950s onward, Martino wrote for prominent Italian vocalists including Caterina Valente and Renato Rascel while also recording his own albums from 1959 through the 1980s. His most celebrated composition is Estate, written in 1960 with lyricist Bruno Brighetti, a bittersweet meditation on summer that became an internationally recognized jazz standard. The song has been recorded by Joao Gilberto, Chet Baker, Toots Thielemans, Shirley Horn, Eliane Elias, and Michel Petrucciani, among many others, and appears on AllSolos in its standard AABA form. Martino also composed Dracula Cha Cha Cha, a novelty number originally featured in the 1959 Italian film Tempi duri per i vampiri. His elegant melodic sensibility and harmonic sophistication ensured that Estate endures as one of the most performed Italian compositions in the jazz repertoire.
