Bernie Miller was an American composer and pianist born in 1919 in Washington, D.C. Though he died in 1945 at just twenty-six years old, he left behind a small body of work that includes one of the most important jazz compositions of the 1950s. Bernie's Tune, featured on AllSolos, achieved landmark status when the Gerry Mulligan Quartet recorded it in 1952 with Chet Baker on trumpet. That recording became the first single released on Dick Bock's Pacific Jazz label and helped launch both the label and the West Coast jazz movement into commercial prominence. The tune attracted numerous interpretations from artists across the jazz spectrum, and in 1955, songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller added lyrics to the instrumental composition. Miller also wrote Loaded, another jazz piece that drew attention from musicians, along with a handful of additional tunes that Mulligan recalled performers enjoying. Despite his brief life and modest output, Miller's influence on jazz is secured by the enduring popularity of Bernie's Tune, a composition whose infectious melody and harmonic design have kept it in active rotation among jazz musicians for more than seven decades.
