Victor Schertzinger was a composer and film director whose career spanned the transition from silent films to talkies. Born in Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania, in 1888, he became one of the first composers to systematically integrate original music into narrative cinema. His two most enduring compositions, "I Remember You" and "Tangerine," both with lyrics by Johnny Mercer, appeared in his final film The Fleet's In. He died in October 1941 before witnessing their rise to the top ten on Jimmy Dorsey recordings. His first published song "Marcheta" appeared in 1913, and other notable compositions include "Dream Lover" from The Love Parade with lyricist Clifford Grey.
