Frank Loesser composed both music and lyrics for over 700 songs spanning from the 1930s through the 1960s, beginning as a Hollywood lyricist before establishing himself as a complete songwriter. His greatest achievement came with the 1950 Broadway musical Guys and Dolls, which produced enduring standards including "If I Were a Bell" and "I've Never Been In Love Before," both of which became jazz favorites. Miles Davis notably recorded "If I Were a Bell" with John Coltrane, cementing its place in the jazz repertoire. His other well-known works include "Baby, It's Cold Outside" and collaborations with Hoagy Carmichael on "Two Sleepy People" and "Small Fry." Loesser's songs became Great American Songbook standards widely covered across pop and jazz contexts.
