Nat Adderley served as composer, arranger, and manager for his brother Cannonball Adderley's celebrated quintet from 1959 to 1975, contributing key original works to the soul jazz and hard bop movements. His most famous composition, "Work Song," introduced on his own 1960 album, became an enduring jazz standard and achieved pop chart success after Oscar Brown Jr. added lyrics. Adderley's other well-known works include "Jive Samba" and "Sermonette," both of which became integral to the jazz repertoire. His compositional style emphasized soulful melodies, blues forms, and accessible grooves that helped define the soul jazz aesthetic of the 1960s. He continued leading groups and composing after Cannonball's death in 1975 until his own passing in 2000.
