Hank Jones composed selectively throughout his career, integrating original works into his recorded output rather than building an extensive standalone catalog. Born in Vicksburg, Mississippi in 1918, Jones developed as a composer alongside his work as a pianist. His original compositions appeared on key recordings, and his writing drew from diverse sources including spirituals, hymns, and gospel traditions, reflecting his Mississippi upbringing and classical training. During his twenty-year tenure with the CBS Orchestra, he composed and improvised incidental music for studio programs. While his compositional output was modest compared to his vast work as a performer, Jones's originals showcased harmonic sophistication and melodic grace. He died in 2010.
