Jerry Brainin was a composer and jazz pianist born in New York in 1916 whose primary legacy rests on a single enduring composition. In 1948, he wrote "The Night Has a Thousand Eyes" with lyricist Buddy Bernier for the film noir of the same name. The song features sophisticated harmonic language blending exotica with jazz progressions. John Coltrane's 1960 recording on Coltrane's Sound transformed the tune into a jazz standard, with his arrangement becoming the definitive version. Brainin also composed title songs for other films and worked as an arranger throughout his career. He died in 2000.
