Bluebird, recorded December 17, 1947, is a blues in E-flat by the Charlie Parker Quintet at approximately 126-127 BPM over a 12-bar form. Unusually, Miles Davis opens the solos with two choruses on trumpet before Parker enters with two choruses of alto saxophone, followed by Duke Jordan for one chorus on piano. The medium tempo and the E-flat key give this blues a relaxed, spacious character. The reversal of the typical solo order, with Davis soloing before Parker, may suggest an informal quality to this particular take. Parker's two-chorus alto solo, when it arrives, is characteristically inventive, infusing the simple blues changes with bebop sophistication. The slower tempo compared to many of the session's other tracks allows for a more deliberate, blues-drenched approach from all three soloists. Bluebird demonstrates the Parker quintet's versatility across different tempos and moods, proving equally compelling in a laid-back groove as at breakneck speed.
