Klauntsance, recorded December 17, 1947, is a Parker composition based on the chord changes of The Way You Look Tonight, performed by the Charlie Parker Quintet at approximately 296-306 BPM in F with an unusual 68-bar AABA' form. Parker launches directly into a one-chorus alto saxophone solo without a composed theme, followed by Miles Davis for one chorus on trumpet and Duke Jordan for a half-chorus on piano. The extended form, nearly twice the length of a standard 32-bar structure, demands exceptional concentration and stamina from the soloists. At this very fast tempo, the elongated choruses become marathon improvisations. Parker navigates the demanding framework with characteristic brilliance, maintaining harmonic precision and melodic invention throughout the extended form. Davis rises to the challenge of the long chorus with growing confidence, and Jordan's half-chorus on piano is a focused display of bebop vocabulary. Klauntsance is one of the more structurally ambitious pieces in Parker's recorded output, and the title is another of his characteristically cryptic word inventions.
