This live recording of "She Absorbed Him" from Justin Chart's 2024 album Born of The Horn stands out as one of the album's most expansive performances, featuring five improvised solos. Chart's original composition is set in C minor with a waltz feel, beginning at approximately 174 BPM and gradually accelerating to around 189 BPM over the course of the performance. Chart opens on alto saxophone before handing off to trumpeter Mike Rocha, who delivers an extended waltz-time solo. Keyboardist Mike Saul follows with his own statement as the tempo picks up slightly. Chart returns for a second alto saxophone solo at the heightened tempo, and drummer Danny Beallo closes the solo section with an energetic drum feature. The waltz meter gives the tune a sweeping, dramatic character that distinguishes it from the funk-heavy material elsewhere on the album. The gradual tempo increase across the solos creates a sense of mounting intensity that mirrors the evocative title. The C minor tonality combined with the three-four time signature lends an air of sophistication and emotional depth, while the live setting captures the band feeding off each other's energy in real time.
