"The Chief" is an original composition by pianist Harold Mabern that opens his 2014 album Afro Blue on the Smoke Sessions label. Set in D minor with a 32-bar AABA form, the tune swings hard at 233 beats per minute, immediately establishing the high-energy, hard bop character that defines much of the album. Three soloists take two choruses each, creating a substantial improvisation section. Tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander leads off with his characteristic full-bodied tone and fluid bebop vocabulary, navigating the minor-key changes with authority. Trumpeter Jeremy Pelt follows with two equally commanding choruses, bringing bright, incisive lines that complement Alexander's warmer sound. Mabern himself closes the solo section with two choruses of pianistic fire, his Memphis-rooted blues sensibility infusing even the fastest passages with soulful conviction. The three-soloist format and extended solo space recall the great hard bop sessions of the 1960s, a tradition Mabern knew intimately from his early career alongside Lee Morgan, Hank Mobley, and other Blue Note stalwarts. By titling the piece "The Chief," Mabern may be paying homage to a mentor or colleague, a practice common in jazz composition. The tune's driving tempo and minor tonality create an urgent, compelling framework that pushes all three soloists to play at the peak of their abilities.
