About
Chad Lefkowitz-Brown follows Randy Brecker with eight choruses of tenor saxophone on "Cantaloupe Island" at approximately 130 BPM, building an extended improvisation over Hancock's 16-bar funk form in F. His post-bop approach brings a different flavor to the groove-based setting, his lines maintaining jazz harmonic sophistication while locking into the funk rhythm section. As the second of three soloists between Brecker and Emmet Cohen, Lefkowitz-Brown's eight-chorus statement demonstrates his ability to sustain creative momentum within a repetitive harmonic framework, finding new melodic and rhythmic ideas with each pass through the compact form.
Chad Lefkowitz-Brown was 31 to 32 years old at the time.
