About
Horace Silver claims the largest solo space with two commanding choruses of piano on "Metamorphosis" at approximately 213 BPM, the most extended improvisation on the most ambitious composition of The Stylings of Silver. Note the 15 bar A sections in this tune. His two-chorus solo over the 80-bar AAB form in D-flat is built with the architectural precision and rhythmic vitality that made him one of the most distinctive pianists in jazz, the extended form providing ample room for his ideas to develop and transform. Following Art Farmer and Hank Mobley, Silver's closing statement brings the performance to its climax, the tune's title of transformation reflected in the evolving character of his improvisation.
Horace Silver was 28 to 29 years old at the time.
