About
Julieta Eugenio's tenor saxophone solo is the second of three solos on this 2018 live performance of Bud Powell's "Celia" at Smalls Jazz Club, following Steve Ash's piano. She takes five choruses of the 32-bar AABA form at 190 BPM in B-flat, building an extended, substantial statement over the rhythm changes. Powell's contrafact on "I Got Rhythm" provides one of the most well-worn harmonic frameworks in jazz, and Eugenio navigates the familiar changes with inventive melodic ideas and rhythmic vitality across her five choruses. She is followed by Paul Gill on acoustic bass.
Julieta Eugenio was 27 to 28 years old at the time.
