About
Danny Janklow's alto saxophone solo is the second of three solos on this 2021 LA Jazz Connection performance of "Isfahan," following Josh Mellicker's electric guitar. He takes two choruses of the 32-bar ABAC form at 100 BPM in D-flat, bringing his alto voice to the Strayhorn-Ellington ballad that was originally conceived as a feature for Johnny Hodges on alto saxophone. The connection to the original instrumentation gives Janklow's interpretation a particular resonance, and his two-chorus solo navigates the tune's chromatically rich harmony with lyricism and harmonic awareness. He is followed by Michael Gurrola on acoustic bass.
Danny Janklow was 31 to 32 years old at the time.
