About
Jimmy Raney's electric guitar solo is the second of three solos on this 1952 recording of "Time on My Hands" from Stan Getz Plays, following Getz's tenor saxophone. He takes half a chorus of the 32-bar AABA' form at 166 BPM in A-flat, his cool-toned guitar providing a natural complement to Getz's saxophone. At 24 to 25, Raney was one of the foremost jazz guitarists of the era, and his concise solo demonstrates the single-note fluency and harmonic sophistication that made him a key figure in the cool jazz movement. Duke Jordan follows on piano.
Jimmy Raney was 24 to 25 years old at the time.
