About
Stan Getz's tenor saxophone solo on Jerome Kern's "The Way You Look Tonight" is the only solo on this 1952 recording from Stan Getz Plays. He takes approximately one and three-quarter choruses of the 64-bar AABA form at a brisk 279 BPM in F, one of the fastest performances on the album. The extended 64-bar form and high velocity create a demanding context, and Getz's playing demonstrates the fluid technique and melodic imagination that allow him to sound relaxed even at extreme tempos. At 24 to 25, his effortless swing at speed was already a defining characteristic of his style.
Stan Getz was 24 to 25 years old at the time.
