About
Stan Getz's tenor saxophone solo on Sigmund Romberg's "Lover, Come Back to Me" is the only solo on this 1952 recording from Stan Getz Plays, taken at a blazing 290 BPM, the fastest tempo on the album. He takes approximately one and three-quarter choruses of the 64-bar AABA form in A-flat, his playing maintaining the light, lyrical quality that defines his sound even at this extreme velocity. The combination of the 64-bar form and near-300 BPM tempo creates a sustained test of improvisational stamina and melodic invention, and Getz meets the challenge with characteristic grace.
Stan Getz was 24 to 25 years old at the time.
