About
Stan Getz's tenor saxophone solo on Gigi Gryce's "Hymn of the Orient" is the first of three solos on this 1952 recording from Stan Getz Plays, one of the few non-standard tunes on an album otherwise devoted to the American songbook. He takes two choruses of the 32-bar AABA form at 225 BPM in F with a swing feel, bringing his characteristic lyricism to Gryce's composition. Getz's ability to make even unfamiliar material sound as natural as a well-known standard is evident here. He is followed by Jimmy Raney on electric guitar and Duke Jordan on piano.
Stan Getz was 24 to 25 years old at the time.
