About
Sahib Shihab wraps up the solo sequence with a single chorus on baritone sax, the last of three improvisations. Taken at a medium-up swing tempo of 154 BPM over the 44-bar AAABAA' in B♭, the improvisation flows with assured, relaxed momentum. Recorded for the album Coltrane in 1957, the performance captures Sahib Shihab at 31 to 32 years old. "Bakai" is an original composition by Calvin Massey, the Philadelphia-born trumpeter and composer who maintained a close creative friendship with John Coltrane dating back to their time together in Jimmy Heath's big band. "Bakai" opens John Coltrane's 1957 album Coltrane, his first recording as a leader for Prestige Records, with a composition by the Philadelphia trumpeter Calvin Massey.
Sahib Shihab was 31 to 32 years old at the time.
