About
Alexis Cole's vocal solo is the first of two improvisations on this uptempo reading of Clifford Brown's "Joy Spring" from her 2021 album Sky Blossom: Songs From My Tour of Duty. Spanning seven-eighths of a chorus over the 32-bar ABCA form in C at a brisk 196 BPM, Cole's scat singing demonstrates the same melodic fluency that defines the best vocal jazz improvisation. The album was inspired by Cole's experiences performing for military personnel overseas, and this energetic performance captures the spirit of connection through music. Cole is followed by trumpeter John Castleman, who takes a full chorus.
Alexis Cole was 44 to 45 years old at the time.
