About
Jeff Jarvis's trumpet solo is the sole improvisation on this bossa nova interpretation of Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Triste" from Alexis Cole's 2021 album Sky Blossom. Spanning one and three-quarter choruses over the 32-bar ABAB form in G at a medium 127 BPM, Jarvis has ample room to explore Jobim's sophisticated harmonic landscape. The extended solo length allows for development across the form's repeating structure, building ideas through the bridge sections. Jobim wrote the tune in 1966 while staying at the Sunset Marquis Hotel in Los Angeles, and its inherent lyricism invites the kind of songful trumpet playing Jarvis delivers here.
Jeff Jarvis was 68 to 69 years old at the time.
