About
Harry "Sweets" Edison's trumpet solo is the second of four solos on "Pennies from Heaven" from the 1955 Pres & Sweets session. Edison takes two choruses over the 32-bar ABAC form in B-flat at approximately 180 BPM, following Young's single-chorus opener. Edison's two-chorus length gives him room to develop his economical, blues-inflected trumpet style at this brisk tempo, building from spare, rhythmically incisive phrases to more elaborate statements. Arthur Johnston's 1936 standard, originally written for the Bing Crosby film of the same name, provides a buoyant harmonic framework for Edison's understated melodic approach.
Harry "Sweets" Edison was 39 to 40 years old at the time.
