About
McCoy Tyner's piano solo is the third of five improvisations on this recording, following Henderson's tenor saxophone. Taking six choruses of the 24-bar form in G at 225 BPM, Tyner brings his signature approach of quartal harmonies and surging rhythmic momentum to the composition's demanding framework. His powerful left-hand voicings and driving right-hand lines generate enormous intensity, the solo building in waves that complement Henderson's preceding statement while asserting Tyner's own formidable musical personality.
McCoy Tyner was 25 to 26 years old at the time.
