About
McCoy Tyner's piano solo is the second of two improvisations on this recording, following Henderson's 15-chorus tenor saxophone statement. Taking 10 choruses of the 12-bar blues in C at 192 BPM, Tyner brings his distinctive harmonic language and rhythmic power to the blues form. His solo builds from the foundation Henderson establishes, Tyner's quartal voicings and percussive attack creating a different but equally compelling approach to the fundamental blues framework. The angular character of Henderson's composition suits Tyner's style particularly well.
McCoy Tyner was 25 to 26 years old at the time.
