About
McCoy Tyner's piano solo is the second of three improvisations on this recording, following Henderson's tenor saxophone. Taking three choruses of the 48-bar ABABCB form in D at 235 BPM, Tyner delivers an expansive statement that fills the extended form with his signature harmonic language. His three-chorus solo allows him to build through multiple phases of intensity, the quartal voicings and surging rhythmic momentum creating waves of sound that push the performance to new heights.
McCoy Tyner was 25 to 26 years old at the time.
