About
McCoy Tyner's piano solo is the first of three improvisations on this mesmerizing waltz, the master take from Wayne Shorter's 1964 album JuJu. Taking four choruses of the 24-bar form in B at 171 BPM in 3/4 time, Tyner brings his signature quartal harmonies and rhythmic drive to the waltz framework. His piano work within this unusual meter demonstrates the adaptability of his style, the powerful left-hand voicings and surging right-hand lines finding natural expression in the triple-meter context.
McCoy Tyner was 25 to 26 years old at the time.
