About
McCoy Tyner's piano solo is the second of two improvisations on this recording, following Shorter's tenor saxophone. Taking three choruses of the 16-bar form in E-flat at 116 BPM, Tyner responds to the composition's dark harmonic landscape with his own powerful statement. His modal explorations and percussive attack bring a different energy to the brooding atmosphere established by Shorter, the piano's harmonic resources allowing Tyner to illuminate corners of the composition that the saxophone alone could not reach.
McCoy Tyner was 25 to 26 years old at the time.
