About
McCoy Tyner's piano solo is the first of three improvisations on this alternate take of the title track from Wayne Shorter's 1964 album JuJu. Taking four choruses of the 24-bar form in B at 172 BPM in 3/4 time, Tyner charts a different course than on the master take, the alternate revealing subtle but significant differences in his improvisational choices. The same solo order as the issued version -- piano, then tenor, then drums -- allows for fascinating comparison between the two recordings from the same session.
McCoy Tyner was 25 to 26 years old at the time.
