About
Miles Davis's trumpet solo is the second of five improvisations on this recording, following Parker's alto saxophone. Taking one chorus of the 32-bar AABA form in C at 214 BPM, Davis actually only plays over the A sections of his chorus, letting Lucky Thompson blow over the bridge. This shared-chorus approach reveals the collaborative, relay-like spirit of the septet's improvisational format, with the bridge handoff adding an element of spontaneous arrangement.
Miles Davis was 19 to 20 years old at the time.
