About
Miles Davis closes out the solos on trumpet with a quarter of the form, following Charlie Parker at approximately 65 BPM. Set within a ballad setting, the 32-bar AABA form and the key of C, the solo allows for nuanced, expressive phrasing. Coming last in the solo order, Davis has the task of building on everything that came before while steering the performance back toward the closing head. Don't Blame Me is a less frequently discussed performance from these sessions, overshadowed by the more celebrated Embraceable You and My Old Flame, but it is equally deserving of attention for the quality of Parker's improvisation. Miles follows Bird and solos over the melody on only the last 8 section.
Miles Davis was 20 to 21 years old at the time.
