About
Conte Candoli's two-chorus trumpet solo is the second of three solos on this up-tempo reading of Bernie Miller's composition. Following Frank Morgan's alto statement, Candoli brings a cooler West Coast trumpet sensibility at 238 BPM over the 32-bar AABA form in D minor, his polished tone and clean articulation providing an effective contrast to Morgan's bebop fire. The interplay between the two horn soloists illustrates the stylistic range of the 1950s Los Angeles jazz scene, where hard bop intensity and West Coast refinement coexisted comfortably.
Conte Candoli was 27 to 28 years old at the time.
