About
Red Garland's piano solo is the third of four solos on this recording, following John Coltrane on tenor sax. Spanning seven choruses of the 12-bar Blues form in B♭ at a brisk 163 BPM with a swing feel, Garland delivers seven choruses of piano, his block chords and single-note lines creating a solo of considerable variety. Garland's extended piano improvisation builds gradually through the choruses, developing melodic ideas with increasing complexity and rhythmic intensity. "Trane's Blues" from Miles Davis's 1956 album Workin' with the Miles Davis Quintet is an extended blues performance featuring four soloists across the 12-bar form in B-flat.
Red Garland was 32 to 33 years old at the time.
