George Tucker was a jazz bassist who began his career in New York in the 1950s. He was the house bassist at the Continental Lounge in Brooklyn and for Minton's Playhouse, where he also served as leader. He performed with well known artists such as Earl Bostic, John Coltrane and Sonny Stitt. Tucker was a sought after sideman and can be heard on recordings by Clifford Jordan, Melba Liston, Horace Parlan, Colman Hawkins and Jaki Bayard. He toured with Lambert, Hendricks& Bavan from 1962 -1963. While performing with guitarist Kenny Burrell, Jordan tragically died from a cerebral hemorrhage in 1965 at the age of 38.

George Tucker took private lessons with Fred Zimmerman at Juilliard in 1957.

Early Life

George Tucker was born in 1927 in Florida and became interested in music while serving in the US Army. In 1947 he moved to New York where he studied at the New York Conservatory of Modern Music.
