On the Mountain is a jazz composition by bassist and composer Gene Perla. The piece was first recorded as the title track of the 1975 album Elvin Jones Is On the Mountain, released on the Charlie Parker label. That trio session, led by the legendary drummer Elvin Jones, featured Jan Hammer on keyboards and Perla on bass. The album stands as a notable entry in Jones' extensive discography, pairing the drummer's powerful and polyrhythmic playing with two versatile collaborators. Perla, who had a close working relationship with Jones, contributed both as performer and composer on the date, with the album also including the tracks Thorn of a White Rose and Namuh. The recording connects Perla to a broader lineage in jazz history; decades later, he appeared on the 2023 album A Series of Circumstances alongside drummer Adam Nussbaum, a project whose concept was itself inspired by Elvin Jones' Live at the Lighthouse LP. On the Mountain has also been recorded by Stephen Foglia's SPF project, as documented on ReverbNation and Apple Music. Beyond these recordings, the composition does not appear to have entered the widely performed jazz repertoire, remaining a distinctive piece within Perla's body of work and the Elvin Jones catalog.
