There By The Door is an original composition by Canadian jazz vocalist and songwriter Caity Gyorgy, written in the style of the Great American Songbook. The tune was inspired by the sale of Gyorgy's childhood home following her parents' separation, a deeply personal subject that reportedly moved her to tears during the writing process. It was first recorded on November 4, 2019, in Toronto at Gordon Wragg Recording Studios and released on her debut EP Now Pronouncing: Caity Gyorgy on La Reserve Records in July 2021. The arrangement features a tentet including trumpet, trombone, clarinet, and saxophones, with a memorable melody built around surprising harmonic twists that reflect Gyorgy's knack for blending classic songbook sensibilities with contemporary emotional depth. Kyle Pogline contributes a flugelhorn solo on the original recording. While not yet a widely covered standard, the tune is representative of Gyorgy's growing catalog of original jazz vocal compositions that have earned international recognition, including performances at the Monterey Jazz Festival and with the UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra. Her songwriting on this EP drew praise from DownBeat and other jazz publications for its melodic inventiveness and filmic narrative quality.
