12th Avenue is an original composition by Canadian jazz vocalist and songwriter Caity Gyorgy, written in the style of the Great American Songbook. The tune explores themes of love at first sight and the power of an initial glance, set to a swinging, effervescent melody with surprising harmonic turns. It was first released on Gyorgy's debut EP Now Pronouncing: Caity Gyorgy on La Reserve Records in July 2021, recorded in Toronto on November 4, 2019, with a tentet arrangement featuring brass, reeds, and piano. Lucas Dubovik's tenor saxophone solo is a highlight of the original recording. The composition exemplifies Gyorgy's distinctive approach of crafting original songs that evoke the melodic sophistication of 1950s jazz standards while incorporating modern lyrical sensibilities. Though still a deep cut rather than a broadly covered standard, the tune reflects the quality of writing that has brought Gyorgy recognition through JUNO awards and appearances at major festivals including the Monterey Jazz Festival. Her companion tune Secret Safe, which appeared on the same EP, won the Grand Prize in the jazz category of the 2021 John Lennon Songwriting Contest, underscoring the strength of her songwriting during this period.
