Bone Bop is an original composition by Kenny Garrett, recorded for his 1992 album Black Hope on Warner Bros. Records. Appearing as track nine, the tune features a 48-bar ABA form and is one of the album's soprano saxophone features, with Garrett switching from his primary alto to soprano. The recording includes Kenny Kirkland on piano and synthesizers, Charnett Moffett on bass, Ricky Wellman on drums, Brian Blade on cymbals, and Don Alias on percussion. The composition is an uptempo, boppish vehicle that lives up to its playful title, providing a framework for energetic improvisation. Black Hope was Garrett's debut on Warner Bros. and his fifth studio album as a leader, recorded at Power Station and Eastside Sound in New York City. Garrett also performed the tune live, as documented on Stars and Stripes, a 1994 live recording on the Jazz Door label, where he played it on alto saxophone with a trio format. On AllSolos, solos from the Black Hope recording are available for study, including performances by Garrett on soprano saxophone and Charnett Moffett on acoustic bass, showcasing both the leader's improvisational agility and his sideman's inventive bass work.
