"Holger's Tune" is an original jazz composition by Estonian pianist and composer Holger Marjamaa. It first appeared on Marjamaa's debut album Mostly Standards, recorded in 2019 with Alexander Claffy on double bass and Lee Pearson II on drums, and released in December 2020. As the title of that album suggests, Marjamaa's program was largely devoted to established jazz repertoire, making this original composition a personal statement set among canonical material. The piece is written in AABA form with an extended 62-bar structure, longer than the typical 32-bar standard, suggesting a composition with expanded sections that allow for more elaborate melodic and harmonic development. Marjamaa, who was born in Tallinn and trained in classical piano from age five before turning to jazz at age seven, eventually earned a master's degree from the Manhattan School of Music. His accolades include the Grand Prix at the XXIV International Solo Jazz Piano Competition in Vilnius and semifinalist status at the 2018 Thelonious Monk Piano Competition. "Holger's Tune" was selected for inclusion on the Estonian Jazz Compilation 2021, indicating recognition within the Baltic jazz community. The composition remains primarily associated with Marjamaa's own performances rather than having entered the wider jazz repertoire, representing the work of a contemporary composer rooted in the jazz tradition while contributing original material to it.
